Annual Mission Trip
Previous Mission Trips
The 2017 mission trip opportunity took us to McDowell County, WV on Sunday, June 25, working on building projects on Monday thru Thursday, and then we returned home on Friday, June 30. We stayed in volunteer centers that have bunk beds, showers and restrooms, and kitchens for us to cook our own meals.
The Outreach Ministry of First Christian Church previous 2016 mission trip was in Puerto Rico from June 19th-25th, 2016. Our mission team raised money throughout the spring to support this trip. They sold Pine Needles for $5/bale during the first three weeks of March, and held a church-wide Yard Sale on the weekend of April 28th-30th.
One of the highlights of each year is the church mission trip. For several years after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, a team of volunteers from First Christian Church went to New Orleans in the spring to work with the Westside Christian Mission Center to rebuild homes and churches and lives in the wake of those devastating natural disasters. In 2012, a work crew from the church went to Birmingham, Alabama to work with Habitat for Humanity, working to build homes there.
In early May of 2013, a group of 12 volunteers went to southern Indiana to work with an organization called March2Recovery, which coordinates teams of volunteers who are working to restore homes, communities, and lives destroyed by the devastating tornado of March 2, 2012. The tornado, rated as a “4” on the NOAA 0-5 intensity scale, stayed on the ground for 50 miles and the 170 mph winds were accompanied by softball-sized hail. It wreaked a path of destruction through Clark, Jefferson, and Washington Counties in Indiana. One of the highlights of the 2013 Mission Trip was an excursion to Cane Ridge, Kentucky – an important historical site for the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).
