The season of Lent, in which we prepare to celebrate Easter, begins on Wednesday, February 22. It is a time of self-reflection and repentence for all Christians and many give up something important to them in order to focus less on their worldly attachments and more on God. The word “lent” actually comes from a word which means “spring” or “renewal” and here at First Christian Chuch we are encouraging you to think of this season as one of renewal and moving forward rather than a season of “doom and gloom”. Yes, we will still celebrate the beginning of Lent with ashes, the symbol of humility, and it is still a time of repentance (“turning around”) and we will be giving up those things that keep us from God. But we will also stress giving and service; for example, what if each of us made an effort every day during this season to practice at least one random act of kindness? What kind of difference would it make in our families, our congregation and our community?

Lenten Observations

February 22 is Ash Wednesday. We will have a light supper at 5:30 in the Opportunity Classroom, followed by a service of the imposition of ashes at 6:00 p.m. in the church sanctuary.

April 1 is Palm/Passion Sunday. We will have only worship service at 10:30 a.m. in the sanctuary. The choir will present special music.

April 5 is Maundy Thursday. At 6:00 we will celebrate the Feast of Passover in the Opportunity Classroom and move to the sanctuary for a Maundy Thursday Communion Service.

April 6 is Good Friday. We will celebrate Good Friday with a Day of Service. Stay tuned for the opportunities!

Each of you is encouraged to practice some sort of daily reflection or meditation. There are a number of good website with Lenten meditations and we also have a couple dozen copies of “Called to Life, Called to Love”, a series of Lenten reflections written by the late Henri Nouwen. These will be placed in the narthex of the sanctuary and in the foyer of the educational/administrative wing.

April 8 is Easter Sunday. Worship services will be at 6:30 in the Memory Garden, 8:45 in Taylor Fellowship Hall, and at 11:00 in the church sanctuary.
