“Where have you seen God today?” is a question that our mission teams got used to hearing from Brother Vance Moore when we went to New Orleans to work on restoring homes that had been damaged by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. He had built, on faith, a facility to house volunteers—a facility that had good mattresses, showers, kitchen and laundry facilities—at the Westside Christian Church Mission Center. Brother Vance was also a master at finding just the right job for everyone to do. Before the Westside Christian Center officially closed, approximately 1700 volunteers had stayed there.

This year our mission team, 18 in number, decided to go to Birminham to partner with Habitat for Humanity, hoping to help restore homes that were damaged during last year’s tornadoes. We left Monday morning in driving rain, but our driver, pastor Mike Simpson, braved the rain and kept us safe. One of the best things about these mission trips is the fellowship on the bus and this time was no different. If you want to get to know folks in your church family, come on the mission trip!

We arrived in Birmingham even more grateful for Brother Vance. We are staying in what used to be the fellowship hall of a church in Fairfield. We are sharing the facility with 18 students, mostly rising sophomores, from Mars Hill College, a Christian college in North Carolina. 25 women share 3 toilets and 4 showers—an interesting situation. The mattresses are thin and covered in plastic. For a brief moment we even considered going on to a hotel, but decided to stay.

The first workday we went to a worksite where a house is being built for the Jamil family, who are first-time homeowners. Mr. Jamil is from Jordan, and a Muslim, and we were all touched by how he so carefully hammered nails into the house that he is clearly proud of. Our site supervisor, Bill, explained that Mr. Jamil is very particular. Everyone found something s/he could do and by the end of two days, all the walls were up and OSB covered the entire house. Toward the end of the second day the trusses had arrived and we knew that the roof would go up next and then work on the interior.
